This is a story about different kinds of loving. Oliver finds it easy to love Jenny, but he can’t learn to love his father. Jenny teaches Oliver about loving, about dying, about being strong. And Oliver learns that ‘Love means you never have to say you’re sorry’.
Love means you never have to say you’re sorry.
Love means never having to say you’re sorry.
１．stupid and rich, clever and poor
Oliver needed the books for his studies, so went to the library desk in the Radcliffe library to ask for a book.
He met Jenny there for the first time.
Every big winner has to be a good loser too.
He knew what it meant.
He took her for coffee, and then she came to know who he really was.
And he asked her to come to see a hockey match. She went to see it.
After the match he walked her to her dorm, then he said he wanted to call her as soon as he got back to his dorm.
２．Blood and stone
Oliver was in the penalty box with his face badly cut in the hockey match with Cornell, where he found his father among the crowd.
He was asked for dinner with his father, but there they had one of the their non-conversations as usual.
All Old Stonyface was interested in was if the Law School had accepted Oliver yet. And a little bit about the Peace Corps.
As Oliver told Jenny his father came to see his match, then she said…
“Your father found time to go all the way to Cornell to watch you play. He loves you.”
“I’m pleased you have problems with your father, and that means you aren’t perfect. That’s why I go out with you.” also said she.
３．We belong together
Oliver finally made love to Jenny and she confessed she loved Oliver very much.
But at the same time he came to know that she wanted to study music in Paris. She said, “After we finish university, you’ll go your way and I’ll go my way.”
“We are together now. We belong together.” said Oliver.
He mentioned their marriage and looked straight into her eyes. “Because,” he said.
They decided to visit Oliver’s parents.
At the dinner table in his parents house talking about the Peace Corps, she answered with a hard look saying “Well done, Mr. Barrett.”
４．Two different kinds of father
Oliver’s father gave Oliver a cold harsh reality. He was told that he would get nothing from his father.
And he became penniless.
As he visited to meet Jenny’s father whose name is Phil, he accepted what Oliver was and who he was.
After their graduation, they had a quiet and beautiful wedding on Sunday.
And soon the two became man and wife.
５．The first three years
For three years each of them worked very hard, but they never too tired to be kind to each other.
One day when a beautiful invitation arrived, an argument just broke out between the two. It was for Stonyface’s sixtieth birthday party.
Oliver didn’t want to go there while Jenny tried to convince Oliver at least to make a call to his father.
After saying what Oliver shouldn’t have said to Jenny, she just run out of the flat.
Running around, thinking of the places she could go and making a call to Phil, Oliver decided to go back to the flat, and found her sitting on the top step.
He said sorry, and she just said love means you never have to say you’re sorry.
